Concussion
Also known as Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI). Concussion has become an ever-increasingly hot button topic for good reason, the symptoms of concussion can be life-altering. The symptoms that patients present with are numerous and varied but classically include fogginess, dizziness, light, and sound sensitivity, severe headaches, severe fatigue with mental or physical exertion, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, balance disturbances, and vertigo. Please scroll to the Functional Neurology drop-down arrow as this is an important topic for anyone who may have suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury or may suspect to have had such an injury.
Neck Pain
Neck pain is one of the most common complaints treated in our office. Whether it’s from an acute injury or from overuse, we have the tools to decrease pain, improve range of motion and improve function.
Back Pain
Back pain diagnosis and treatment is a major health care expense in America. Most individuals will experience an episode of back pain in their lifetime. In the majority of cases, you do not need imaging (x-rays, MRI, CT, etc.) to determine the cause or to treat your lower back pain. Spinal manipulation and other manual therapies, as well as exercise, are an effective treatment option for the management of acute and chronic lower back pain
Joint Pain
Seems simple enough, “My shoulder hurts, my hip hurts”. The question is what is causing it? Arthritis? If so which variety? Cancer? Nerve Pain? Fracture? Let our doctors assist you in finding out the reason for the pain, and if appropriate the treatment. Our doctors work hand in hand with your medical counterparts and we will assist you in finding the right doors to walk through.
Headache
Headaches are as varied as are the individuals who suffer from them. Their classifications are typically based on the location of the head pain and its severity. Some headaches are accompanied by visual, auditory, and/or sensory changes. Treatment of headaches in our facility may accompany any and all of the treatment modalities we have to offer including acupuncture, chiropractic care, functional neurology, bioenergetics, and nutrition.
Migraine
They are classified in two categories “Worse and Worser”. Actually, the two varieties are known as 1. Classical in that the migraine headache is accompanied by some form of aura, which is dependent on the area of the brain in which hypoxia is located. 2. Common, which comes jam-packed with all the fun of a migraine headache including headache localized on one side of the head or eye, nausea, light and sound sensitivity and difficulty focusing. It does, however, spare you from the aura which can include altered vision, sound, sensation and smell prior to the onset of the headache.
Whiplash
A whiplash injury is caused by forceful acceleration and deceleration of the neck and head. Typically, whiplash occurs following a motor vehicle accident but it can also occur following sports injuries and forceful “whip” to the neck or head. It is not uncommon following a whiplash-type injury for there to also be a concussion especially if it occurred at a high rate of speed (please read more on the concussion tab). If you were injured as a result of a motor vehicle accident we recommend you speak with an attorney because as much as it is a medical issue it is also a legal issue.
Nerve pain
Burning, shooting, buzzing, prickling, tingling, burning, freezing, deep boring, toothache, no fun no fun no fun. With the right approach Nerve pain is still difficult to treat but not impossible. Ask our doctors what approach may be right for you.
Vertigo
The classic definition of vertigo includes the condition known as BPPV(Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). Most people mistake dizziness for Vertigo when in actuality dizziness is just one of the many symptoms that occur with Vertigo. Our doctors are board-certified functional neurologists and are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of BPPV.
Parkinsons
Parkinsons disease is a neurological disorder affecting movement. Common symptoms associated with Parkinson’s are: muscle rigidity, slowed movements, uncontrolled movements or tremors, changes in balance, posture, speech, and writing.
Diabetes
Most people that enter our clinic know whether they have a clinical diagnosis of Type I or Type II diabetes. What they may not realize is that Ultimate Wellness may be just the thing for you. The Big 3 symptoms of diabetes include polyuria(increased urination), polydipsia(increased thirst) and polyphagia(increased intake of food).
Weight Loss
This is a major goal of many in our modern society today. An increase in sedentary lifestyles and the ease in which food is obtained has led to this epidemic. Dr. Ala is trained in the use of Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA) and its ability to measure lean body mass (bone and muscle) and compare it to fat mass. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that the 20 pounds of weight you worked so hard to lose didn’t turn out to be muscle mass?
Constipation
Constipation is a symptom with many causes. Constipation is defined as infrequent and or difficulty in passing stool. Common causes of constipation in older adults include low fiber diet, lack of exercise, medication as well as certain medical conditions.
Fatigue
Fatigue is a condition that varies in complexity. It is a very generalized term that can be extremely difficult to remedy. Causes of fatigue may include metabolic dysfunction, autoimmune conditions, primary muscle weakness, vascular insufficiencies, dysautonomias, spinal stenosis, neurodegenerative conditions just to name a few. Do not dismiss fatigue as a harmless ailment, seek answers as soon as possible.
Ear Infections
Ear infections are common among young children, this is because their eustachian tubes anatomy and their immune system have not been exposed to the pathogens that cause these infections. Mild ear infections often get better without antibiotic treatment. The American Medical Association recommends “delayed prescriptions” for the treatment of mild ear infections, where the prescription is written but the parents wait for 48hours to fill it. During this time parents can see if their child gets better, worse or stays the same. Following the use of an antibiotic, probiotics should be taken to help replenish gut bacteria.
Lyme
Lyme disease is an infection caused by the bacteria Borrelia Burgdorferi. This bacterial infection is transmitted by tick bites. Common symptoms of a Lyme disease are flu-like symptoms, joint pain, muscle weakness, and a bulls-eye rash. Even though Lyme disease is treated with antibiotics, many people continue to suffer from many of the symptoms following treatment.
