Dr. Ala Lysyk-Smith grew up in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada with four older brothers. She attended Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She received her Doctor of Chiropractic from Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, MN. Shortly after completing her education, she married Dr. Kelly Smith. The couple moved to Fergus Falls and opened Smith Family Chiropractic in 1995. The couple has one beautiful daughter, Maya.
Dr. Ala was inspired to study the brain after attending a symposium in 2001 at which Dr. Fredrick Carrick of the Carrick Institute presented his research and findings on the effects of head and neck trauma on the brain and nervous system globally. Since that time, she has dedicated her time and energy to mastering the function of the brain. She has completed more than 2000 hours of postgraduate training in Chiropractic Functional Neurology. Chiropractic Functional Neurology is a specialty of chiropractic that goes above and beyond the musculoskeletal paradigm. The spine and nervous system are paired both anatomically and functionally. That which affects the spine and head, affect the brain and spinal cord. They are inseparable and must be examined and treated with precision and the skills of a surgeon.
From 2009-2012 Dr. Ala shifted her training focus to Traumatic Brain Injuries, particularly concussions. She had the honor and pleasure to study under Dr. Frederick Carrick himself and work alongside him while treating patients– an experience that allowed her to glean from his immense knowledge of the neurological system.
Her hobbies include spending time with her family, cooking, gardening, ping pong, working out and researching.
